What is specific to this sector

Building safety regimes in several markets now require a documented information trail through design, construction and handover, retained and producible for the life of the building. Any document system serving a contractor has to be designed for retrieval years later by someone who was not involved, which is a different requirement from day-to-day access.

Retention and payment terms in construction are governed by specific legislation in most markets, with defined notice periods and consequences for missing them. Payment application automation has to respect those dates precisely, because a late notice can extinguish an entitlement rather than merely delay it.

Subcontractor compliance — insurance, right to work, qualification cards, tax status — carries liability that flows up the chain to the main contractor. A system that tracks expiry dates and blocks site access on lapse is doing compliance work rather than administration, and should be built with that seriousness.
